Early Math Courses Key to Achievement

A recent Dept. of Ed. report indicates that early secondary school training in algebra and geometry is a gateway to college opportunities and future employability.

The report, "Mathematics Equals Opportunity," shows that 83 percent of students who take algebra and geometry enroll in college, compared to 36 percent college enrollment among those who don't take these courses. Among low-income students, only 27 percent of those without strong math coursework make it into college.

The new report includes "action steps" for parents, educators and policy makers, on how to support math learning and ensure that K-7 students are prepared for the transition to algebra by the 8th grade.

The report is available on the Web: www.ed.gov/pubs/math or by calling (800) USA-LEARN.
