Opening the Doors to Higher Learning During a Feb. 4 event at the White House, the Advancement Via Individual Determination program (AVID) was recognized for its success in helping students attain the dream of college. In a ceremony that marked the announcement of a budget initiative for $140 million to promote partnerships like AVID, President Clinton and Vice President Gore took note of AVID's success at enrolling 90 percent of AVID students nationwide in a college-prep sequence and placing a significant number of graduates in four-year colleges and universities. expanding opportunity AVID continues growing throughout the seven county area of Bay Region IV. Last year at this time there were eleven schools in four counties with AVID programs; this year there are 21 sites in six counties. AVID is a program that identifies under-achieving students with high potential. These students are put into rigorous course work and given support in their regularly scheduled AVID elective class. The goal is to have these students UC eligible by the time they graduate from high school. sustainability Compelling data shows that students who stay in the AVID program three years or longer go on to college at over a 90 percent rate. Two years later, 89 percent of those who started college are still in college.
