New Resource Sorts Out School Improvement Issues

"Understanding California's School Improvement Issues," a new handbook from EdSource, provides an overview of the issues that are often included under the umbrella-term "school improvement," explaining how these issues affect K-12 education.

jargon-free info

"The Handbook is ... one of a kind in the state with no similar model in the nation," said EdSource deputy director Mary Perry, who coordinated the handbook project. The book is an "up-to-date, concise and jargon-free reference," said Perry, with the latest information on education law, policy, opinion research and debates about California's schools.

A broad scope

EdSource staff members identified 50 topics relevant to local school communities, and categorized these into five broad areas:

curriculum

student performance

teaching and instruction

funding

governance and accountability

project goals

According to Perry, the new handbook should help people with different backgrounds and perspectives work together on school improvement with a good level of mutual trust based on the neutral, accurate information in the book.
